Module 5.3 Best time to trade forex as a Kenyan (East African Time)
The Forex market operates 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. But here is a secret that will save you from exhaustion and burnout: Not all hours of the day are equal. If you try to trade 24 hours a day, you will lose your money and your mind.
The market is driven by liquidity (volume of money). Liquidity only exists when the major financial hubs are awake and at their desks. Since we are trading from Kenya, we must convert the global sessions into East African Time (EAT).
The Global Sessions (EAT)
Session Summary Notes
| Session | Time (EAT) | Market Behavior |
|---|---|---|
| Asian (Tokyo/Sydney) | 3:00 AM - 10:00 AM | Low volume, tight sideways consolidation. Poor time for breakouts. |
| London | 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM | Massive liquidity injection. Trend direction established. High EUR/GBP volatility. |
| New York | 3:00 PM - 11:00 PM | Heaviest institutional volume. Wall Street opens, USD dominates. |
| The Overlap (Golden Window) | 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM | London & NY open simultaneously. Peak volume, tightest spreads, cleanest trends. Ideal for Kenyan traders. |
Self-Evaluation Check
1. What is typically the behavior of the market during the Asian Session (3:00 AM to 10:00 AM EAT)?
2. Why is the window between 3:00 PM and 7:00 PM EAT referred to as the 'Golden Window'?
