Hey guys, I'm currently based in Kilimani and the recent KPLC blackouts are killing my trades during the London/New York overlap. I've already missed two major entries on XAUUSD because my fiber connection dropped when the power went out. What is everyone using for power backup and secondary internet?
- Is a standard UPS enough for a MacBook and a monitor, or should I get a dedicated inverter?
- Which 4G/5G backup (Safaricom vs Faiba) is actually reliable when the power goes out in the estate?
Appreciate any tips to keep the charts running.

A basic UPS won't save you for long. I invested in a 1.2kVA pure sine wave inverter with two 100Ah deep cycle batteries. It keeps my dual-monitor setup and the router running for a solid 8 hours without KPLC. Definitely worth the investment if you are serious about full-time trading.
Forget Faiba when the power dies—the neighborhood poles usually lose signal too. Get a Safaricom 5G router and keep it on a separate power bank or a mini-UPS. It's the most stable backup I've found for when the fiber lines act up during the rains.
I use a 12V mini-UPS for my router specifically, it cost me about 3k at Luthuli Avenue. It keeps the Wi-Fi alive instantly during the switchover. For the PC, I just use a gaming laptop so I don't need to worry about monitor power—if KPLC strikes, I just keep holding the trade on the laptop battery until the power returns.
I treat my power backup like a business expense. If you're trading prop firm accounts like FTMO or FundedNext, you can't afford a disconnection during a trade execution. I have a solar setup with a small lithium battery bank; it's cleaner than the petrol generator noise and more reliable than KPLC, plus it pays for itself in avoided slippage losses.
